History
Moon Mullican played country music from the piano bench, and he played it hard: a pounding boogie-woogie left hand, jazzy right-hand runs and a loose, shouting vocal that owed as much to blues and Western swing as to hillbilly music. Billed as the "King of the Hillbilly Piano Players", he grew up near Corrigan in Polk County, Texas, where he started on an organ his religious father had bought for singing hymns at home. He learned his trade in the Texas dance halls and honky-tonks, playing in Western swing outfits before recording under his own name. In 1950 the waltz "I'll Sail My Ship Alone" became his biggest hit, and in 1951 "Cherokee Boogie" showed the other side of him, a fast, rhythmic number built for dancing. That mix of rolling piano boogie and country song sits right at the root of rockabilly, and Jerry Lee Lewis named him as a major influence on both his singing and his playing. Mullican died on New Year's Day in 1967. His records are recognisable within a few bars by the piano, which leads the band rather than sitting behind it.
