History
Moğollar were among the first Turkish bands to treat Anatolian folk melodies as raw material for rock, layering bağlama and kemençe over electric guitars, organ and heavy drums into long, hypnotic arrangements. Formed in Istanbul in late 1967, the group became one of the founders of what came to be called Anatolian rock, with Cahit Berkay's bağlama and guitar central to the sound. In 1970 they moved to Paris, where their 1971 album Les Danses et Rythmes de la Turquie d'hier à aujourd'hui won the Grand Prix du Disque of the Académie Charles Cros. The band also served as a backing group for major Turkish vocalists, working with Cem Karaca and Selda Bağcan in the early 1970s and briefly with Barış Manço. Records such as Hittit Sun kept pushing their instrumental, almost cinematic side. After splitting in 1976 they reunited in 1993 and continued performing. Their music is recognisable by folk modes played at rock volume and by the dialogue between traditional instruments and electric ones.
