History
The Mississippi Mass Choir sings Deep South church music at full scale: slow-building traditional songs, a Hammond and piano rooted in the blues, and a choir that answers its soloists like a packed congregation on a Sunday night. It was founded in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1988 by Frank Williams, a former member of the Jackson Southernaires who ran gospel at Malaco Records, the label that released the choir's records. Success came immediately. The self-titled debut in 1989 went to number one on Billboard's spiritual chart. God Gets the Glory also reached number one in 1991, and It Remains to Be Seen... held the top of the chart for about a year. The choir kept recording through the decades, with later albums such as I'll See You in the Rapture and Declaration of Dependence, and received a place in the Stellar Awards Hall of Fame in 2017. The sound is unmistakably Southern: warm, unhurried, blues-inflected and built to carry a lead singer home on the last chorus.
