History

Miranda Lambert writes country songs with a short fuse. She came out of small-town East Texas, learned the trade in clubs, reached a national audience through a televised talent contest, and made her name with songs about women who do not take it quietly: Gunpowder & Lead and Kerosene set a burning house against a country-radio backbeat. That reputation undersells the range. The House That Built Me is plainly sung nostalgia with nothing to prove, and Bluebird trades the fire for something steadier. Her records lean rock, with gritty electric guitar and a voice that keeps its Texas vowels and its rasp instead of smoothing them for the format. She has also worked outside her own name, in a trio with two other singers whose records are funnier and more rural than mainstream Nashville usually permits. In award terms she is the most decorated artist in Academy of Country Music history, which is an odd fate for someone who kept writing songs about arson.
