History
MFSB were the house band of Philadelphia soul, a large studio ensemble whose strings, horns and rhythm section defined the lush sound of Philadelphia International Records in the 1970s. The name stands for Mother Father Sister Brother, and the group gathered dozens of session musicians who worked at Sigma Sound Studios behind acts such as the O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and Billy Paul. At its core was the rhythm section of bassist Ronald Baker, guitarist Norman Harris and drummer Earl Young, whose steady four-on-the-floor drumming with open hi-hats became a building block of disco. Under their own name they scored a major hit with "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)", the theme of the television show Soul Train, recorded with vocals by The Three Degrees. Their 1973 track "Love Is the Message" had an even longer life: its extended, gliding groove became a staple for club DJs and remained a touchstone as disco turned into house. The album Universal Love followed in 1975. Listeners recognise MFSB by soaring strings, bright horns and that driving, elegant beat.
