Melody Gardot (born February 2, 1985, New Jersey) is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and pianist known for a smoky contralto voice and a sound blending jazz with blues, bossa nova, folk, and pop. At 19, while studying fashion in Philadelphia, she was hit by a car while cycling in 2003, suffering serious head and pelvic injuries that confined her to a hospital bed for over a year. Unable to play piano during recovery, she turned to songwriting and singing as therapy, later becoming a public advocate for music therapy. That material became her 2006 debut Worrisome Heart, followed by My One and Only Thrill (2009), The Absence (2012), Currency of Man (2015), Sunset in the Blue (2020), and the duo album Entre Eux Deux (2022) with pianist Philippe Baden Powell. She has scored five Top Ten Billboard Traditional Jazz Albums, including two number ones. A lasting effect of the accident, hypersensitivity to light, left her wearing dark glasses ever since, now part of her signature look. Critics often compare her phrasing to Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.
