History

MC Solaar raps quietly. The delivery is even, close to spoken French, and the force comes from assonance and internal rhyme rather than from volume, which set him apart from almost everything else in early French hip hop. Born in Senegal to Chadian parents and raised in the Paris suburbs, he arrived with a vocabulary drawn as much from literature and chanson as from American rap, and with production that leaned on jazz and soul samples rather than on hard breaks. Bouge de la made him a national figure, and Caroline, a love song told almost entirely in puns, proved that a rap record in French could be witty without turning comic. Later material such as La belle et le bad boy keeps the same measured cadence over glossier tracks. He was the first French rapper heard widely outside France, and the long line of French MCs who value wordplay over aggression runs back to him. What a listener recognises first is the calm: a voice that never raises itself and still lands every rhyme.
