History

Before she sang for a living, Maya Kristalinskaya worked as an engineer: she graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute and spent her first working years in a design bureau. Her voice was a low, close contralto with no operatic push behind it, and the microphone did the carrying. «А снег идёт» (1962), written by Andrey Eshpay, gave her a first national hit, and «Текстильный городок» followed in 1964. «Нежность» (1966), by Alexandra Pakhmutova and Nikolai Dobronravov, became the song she is remembered by, and its use in the film «Три тополя на Плющихе» fixed it in Soviet memory. She started out singing with Yuri Saulsky's orchestra. Illness, Hodgkin's lymphoma, shaped both her life and her stage look: the scarf at her throat that she never took off became her trademark. Through the 1970s she appeared on television less and less. The estrada style she stands for is intimate rather than declamatory, built on quiet dynamics, conversational phrasing and an orchestra kept behind the voice.
