History

Mary Mary brought gospel into the language of turn-of-the-century R&B and hip-hop without softening the message. The duo is two sisters, Erica and Tina Campbell, who grew up singing in church in Inglewood, California, and first worked as songwriters before stepping out as performers. Their debut album Thankful arrived in 2000 carrying "Shackles (Praise You)", a track whose programmed groove and radio-ready hook crossed well beyond gospel audiences. The formula stayed recognisable across the decade: tight sister harmonies, one voice leading while the other answers, choir-sized backing parts stacked over drum-machine beats and live bass. The Sound (2008) gave them "God in Me", another crossover single built on a club-leaning pulse, and Something Big (2011) kept the same bright, polished urban gospel production. Later the sisters reached a wider public through a reality television series about their family and career, and both went on to solo work, but the duo remains the reference point for joyful, groove-driven contemporary gospel.
