History
Marvin Gaye sang with a range that let him move between a rough baritone, a smooth middle voice and a falsetto, and from the late 1960s he began stacking all three on the same track. He started at Motown as a session drummer and a singles artist, cut duets with Tammi Terrell and others, and had a run of hits before he insisted on producing himself. What's Going On came out of that insistence: a continuous song cycle about war, poverty and the ruin of the environment, arranged with jazz chords, congas and overlapping conversational vocals rather than the label's usual verse and chorus. Let's Get It On moved the same technique to desire, slow and unhurried and built on a single guitar figure. After leaving Motown he recorded Sexual Healing, whose drum machine and clipped guitar pointed at where R&B would go in the following decade. His life ended in 1984, at the point where that late style was reaching a new audience.
