History
Marty Robbins was a country singer of unusual range, both vocally and in style, but he is remembered above all for turning the cowboy ballad into long, cinematic storytelling. His clear, supple tenor could carry a pop ballad, a Hawaiian number or a teenage rock song, and through the 1950s he had hits in several of those modes, including A White Sport Coat. The defining moment came with Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in 1959. Its centrepiece, El Paso, runs close to five minutes, tells a complete story of love and a fatal gunfight, and is carried by Grady Martin's nylon-string guitar lines; it became a number one on both the country and pop charts. Big Iron, from the same album, became almost as well known. More Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs followed in 1960 and extended the formula. Robbins grew up in Arizona, and the desert imagery of his western songs felt lived rather than borrowed. His western records are recognised by their narrative lyrics, Spanish-tinged guitar, soft harmonies and a voice that sounds calm even at the moment of the shot.
