History

Manu Chao writes short, looping songs that mix Spanish, French, English and Portuguese, often inside one track, and stitches them together with radio snippets, street noise and voices recorded on the move. He grew up in Paris in a Spanish family and first became known fronting a band that welded punk energy to rumba, ska and North African pop. His solo work stripped that down: acoustic guitar, a light reggae pulse, a drum machine, and melodies repeated until they turn into something closer to a chant. Clandestino, both the album and the song, takes the point of view of an undocumented migrant and sold in numbers nobody expected from a record that quiet. Me Gustas Tu runs one of his own chord patterns under a list of things the singer likes, and it is the one most people can hum. Bongo Bong is nursery-simple on purpose. The musical phrases that recur across his albums are deliberate: he treats a melody as material to be reused rather than spent.
