History
Mall Grab made his name with house music that sounds recorded too hot on purpose: blown-out kicks, crackling samples, hiss left in, chords that feel pulled off a worn tape. Born in Australia and raised around Newcastle in New South Wales, he later moved to London and became one of the most visible producers of what the press of the mid 2010s called lo-fi house. Tracks like "Sun Ra" spread fast online, and the saturated, dusty mix was the point rather than a limitation. He drew as much from hip-hop and punk attitude as from Chicago and deep house, and his DJ sets often swung between rough house, breaks and harder techno. His labels Looking for Trouble and Steel City Dance Discs, along with the How the Dogs Chill compilations, gave room to that looser, grittier side of club music. The 2022 album What I Breathe widened the palette with guests and slower moods. A listener tends to know him by the overdriven low end, the sampled vocal loops and the feeling of a club record played through a slightly broken speaker.
