History

Makoto Matsushita is a guitarist, singer and arranger whose small solo catalogue from the early 1980s is now prized as a peak of Japanese AOR. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, he trained at a Yamaha music school and started working as a session musician in 1974, while still a teenager. His debut First Light (1981) is the record most listeners find first: clean, chorus-drenched guitar, sleek keyboards, tight grooves and gentle English and Japanese vocals in the mould of American West Coast pop. The next two albums, The Pressures and the Pleasures (1982) and Quiet Skies (1983), moved toward progressive rock and fusion, with longer instrumental passages and more ambitious arrangements. In 1983 he co-founded the band AB's, and over the following decades he formed several other groups, including an a cappella ensemble and an ambient unit. Much of his career has been behind the scenes, playing guitar and arranging for major Japanese pop acts. His sound is marked by a polished guitar tone, careful harmonies and calm, sophisticated production.
