History

Magdalena Bay is a Los Angeles duo that grew out of internet culture as much as out of any local scene, and the pop they make carries that in its construction: synth lines with an unmistakable 1980s finish, chopped and pitched vocals, sudden structural turns that drop one song into another in the middle of a chorus. Mercurial World in 2021 assembled all of it into a record that circulated through online music communities long before radio noticed, and the visual side, home-made videos with a deliberately cheap and surreal look, became inseparable from the songs. Imaginal Disk in 2024 widened the palette towards psychedelia and longer-form arrangement and stood among the most praised pop records of its year. The writing stays hook-first even when the production is at its strangest, which is why a track like Killshot can carry several turns without losing its centre. Listeners recognise the airy close-miked voice and the sense that the song is being edited while it plays.
