History
Madeleine Peyroux is an American jazz and blues singer-songwriter born in 1974 in Athens, Georgia. After her parents divorced, she moved with her mother to Paris at age 13, where as a teenager she began busking in the Latin Quarter, first with a group called The Riverboat Shufflers and then, from age 16, with The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, touring Europe for two years singing songs by Billie Holiday and Fats Waller. That apprenticeship shaped her 1996 debut album, Dreamland, which Time magazine called the most exciting new vocal performance of its season. She broke through commercially with 2004's Larry Klein-produced Careless Love, which sold roughly half a million copies and went gold, followed by 2006's Half the Perfect World. Her smoky, understated delivery has drawn constant comparisons to a mid-career Billie Holiday, though she plays guitar and brings a folk singer's phrasing to jazz and blues standards. Later albums include Anthem (2018), co-written with producer Klein, guitarist David Baerwald, and others, and Let's Walk, her ninth studio album.
