History

Macross 82-99 makes bright, bouncy dance music out of other people's records: disco, funk and Japanese city pop loops, sped up, filtered and pinned to a hard four-to-the-floor kick. The project comes from Mexico City and draws its name and imagery from the anime and video game culture of the 1980s and 1990s, with Sailor Moon as a recurring reference. Its 2013 releases Neo Tokyo and Sailorwave are commonly cited as the starting point of future funk, the upbeat offshoot of vaporwave that swapped slowed-down mall music for pumping, dancefloor-ready edits. A Million Miles Away followed in 2014, and the producer kept releasing through internet-era labels such as Neoncity Records and Business Casual, later returning to the Sailorwave idea with a sequel. Macross 82-99 is also part of Sailor Team, a collective that links future funk with French house. The sound is easy to recognise: pitched-up vocal snippets from Japanese pop, glossy chords, heavy sidechain compression and a cheerful nostalgia for a Tokyo known mostly through screens.
