History

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis worked as a full partnership rather than a rapper with a producer on retainer, and the split shows in the music. Lewis built the arrangements around live horns, strings, piano and gospel-sized backing vocals instead of samples, which put the pair closer to a band than to most rap records of the period. That approach carried The Heist in 2012. Thrift Shop rode a single baritone saxophone figure, Can't Hold Us ran on piano and drums pushed to marching pace, and Same Love set its argument for same-sex marriage over a plain piano loop and a sung chorus. The duo also handled their own release and promotion without a major label, and the scale of the result made that route a reference point for independent artists. Four Grammys followed in 2014, including Best Rap Album, and with them a long public argument about who had been overlooked. This Unruly Mess I've Made in 2016 kept the live instrumentation and a heavier conscience.
