History

Macintosh Plus is the alias behind Floral Shoppe (2011), the album that for many listeners defines vaporwave. It was one of many names used by Ramona Xavier, the American producer best known as Vektroid, who in the same year also released work as Laserdisc Visions and New Dreams Ltd. Floral Shoppe takes fragments of eighties and nineties pop, smooth jazz and R&B, pitches them down, loops them unevenly and lets them stutter, so that familiar-sounding music turns uneasy and dreamlike. Its best-known track, usually shortened to "リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー", is built from a slowed Diana Ross song and became the genre's most recognisable piece, later spreading far beyond the scene as a meme. The cover, with a classical bust on a pink checkerboard against a cityscape, turned into vaporwave's visual shorthand. The Japanese track titles, the deliberate glitches and the sense of consumer nostalgia gone slightly wrong all became templates others copied. Few records in any internet-born genre have had such a clear, lasting influence.
