History

Mac Mall is one of the clearest voices of Vallejo rap, the Bay Area city that produced its own dense, funky branch of West Coast hip hop in the 1990s. His sound rests on slow, bass heavy grooves with warm synth leads and a lot of space, over which he raps in a smooth but sharp and wordy flow, full of local slang. He was still a teenager when his debut Illegal Business? came out in 1993, with production from Khayree, the Vallejo producer whose deep funk backdrops shaped much of the city's output at the time. The album became a regional classic, and its mix of street reporting, humour and youthful swagger made Mac Mall a name well beyond Vallejo. He is closely associated with the wider Vallejo scene, including Mac Dre, and his 1996 album Untouchable brought him to a larger label and a national audience. A Mac Mall record gives itself away through Bay Area slang, a relaxed but quick delivery and thick, low end heavy G-funk beats that sound made for car stereos.
