History

Igor Matvienko, composer and producer, put Lyube together in 1989 around the voice of Nikolai Rastorguev, a baritone with a thick chest register; Alexander Shaganov wrote most of the words. The debut «Атас» (1990) was still streetwise and jokey. By «Комбат» (1996) the formula had settled: soldier and village diction, accordion and balalaika figures laid over a rock rhythm section, choruses built for a room to sing back. «Конь» travelled further than the band itself, sung at tables and in barracks with no instruments at all, often by people who have never wondered whose song it is. Matvienko builds the arrangements on contrast, a verse close to speech and then a chorus in harmony at full volume. From the mid-1990s that niche belonged to them, and the patriotic end of Russian pop has been measuring itself against these songs ever since.
