History

Lustmord is the project of Welsh sound artist Brian Williams, and it is widely credited with shaping dark ambient: vast, sub-bass heavy soundscapes that feel like being deep underground or in the void between stars. Williams emerged from the early 1980s industrial scene and was associated with the Australian group SPK before focusing on his own work. From the start he recorded in unusual acoustic spaces, including caves and crypts, and blended those field recordings with synthesizer drones and heavy processing. Paradise Disowned (1986) captured that early, more abrasive approach, while Heresy (1990) is often named as the record that defined the genre: slow, subterranean rumbles, distant metallic groans and a sense of immense, hostile space, with no melody to hold on to. The Place Where the Black Stars Hang (1994) turned outward, trading the underground for cosmic emptiness. His influence runs through dark ambient, drone metal and film sound design. A listener recognises Lustmord by pressure more than notes: low frequencies felt in the chest, glacial movement and total darkness.
