History

Lush combined shoegaze's shimmering guitar haze with sharp pop songwriting and the entwined voices of Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, who shared guitar and writing duties. The band formed in London in the late 1980s and signed to 4AD, where early EPs placed them among the first wave of the scene. Spooky, the 1992 debut album, was produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins and wrapped their melodies in thick, glistening reverb. Split in 1994 gave the songs more room and clarity, and Lovelife in 1996 moved decisively toward Britpop, with brighter, wittier tracks such as Ladykillers, Single Girl and Ciao!, a duet with Jarvis Cocker. The death of drummer Chris Acland in 1996 brought the band to an end. Lush reunited briefly in the mid 2010s before stopping again. What sets them apart is the paired female vocals floating over chiming guitars, a knack for hooks that the dreamier shoegaze acts rarely chased, and lyrics that grew more direct and sardonic as the decade went on.
