History
Luke Combs sings in a big, unhurried baritone and makes records that deliberately avoid the pop gloss dominating country radio when he arrived. The band sounds like a band: real drums, electric guitars mixed with some grit, steel present but not decorative, and the vocal left close enough to hear the North Carolina in it. What set him apart was a run of consecutive number ones on country airplay longer than the format had seen, built from songs conventional in shape and unusually well sung. "Hurricane" started it, a straightforward metaphor delivered with enough force that the metaphor stops mattering. "Beautiful Crazy" is the ballad everybody knows. His reading of "Fast Car" carried the song to a country audience decades after it was written and became a crossover hit in its own right, which reopened an old conversation about who gets to sing what. He performs in a ball cap and a T-shirt with no staging to speak of, and that plainness is part of what the audience came for.
