History
Ludmilla brought funk carioca into Brazilian pop without sanding off its edges. She comes from the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area and first broke through as a teenager under the name MC Beyoncé, before switching to her own name and a bigger, more polished sound. Hoje (2014) announced that change, and later hits such as A Danada Sou Eu and Hello Mundo showed how far she could stretch the style. Her records keep the core of Rio funk, the heavy tamborzão pulse and the call-and-response hooks, but lay R&B-trained vocals, pop choruses and modern production on top. She is a real singer rather than a shouting MC, and that range lets her move between funk, pop, R&B and pagode, which she has explored in a separate live project. As a Black woman from the periphery who became one of the country's biggest stars, she is often discussed as a symbol of funk's move from favela parties to arenas. Listeners know her by a strong, flexible voice, confident lyrics and a sound that keeps one foot firmly in the baile.
