History

Love Song played soft, harmony-rich country rock that became the sound of the Jesus movement in Southern California. Chuck Girard, Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax and Fred Field formed the band in Costa Mesa in 1970, before any of them were believers. They found faith one by one through Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel, the church at the centre of the hippie revival, and began playing its packed concerts and Bible studies. Their music sat close to the Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash: acoustic and electric guitars, gentle tempos and stacked vocal harmonies, with Girard's clear tenor in front. The self-titled debut of 1972 was for years described as the best selling Christian album up to that point and still appears on lists of the most important records in contemporary Christian music. Final Touch followed in 1974, and the band later reunited for live dates and the album Welcome Back. They are remembered as one of the first bands to make Christian rock sound like the radio of its day.
