History

Los Cafres are one of the founding bands of Argentine reggae, playing a patient, roots-oriented style that favours groove and melody over flash. They came out of Buenos Aires in the late 1980s, when reggae in Argentina was still a small scene built around a handful of bands, and they grew with it through the 1990s. Singer Guillermo Bonetto gave the group its gentle, slightly melancholic voice, and the arrangements lean on steady one drop drums, round bass lines, organ bubble and horn lines that sound closer to Jamaican studio records than to rock. Frecuencia cafre and Suena la alarma established them, and romantic songs such as "Tus ojos" and "Si el amor se cae" reached listeners well beyond the reggae crowd. Their lyrics mix love songs with quieter reflections on society and spirituality. Los Cafres are recognised by that unhurried tempo, warm horns and Bonetto's soft delivery, and they remain a reference for the roots side of reggae in the Río de la Plata.
