History
Ella Yelich-O'Connor was signed to Universal at thirteen, grew up in Devonport on Auckland's North Shore, and put out The Love Club EP for free in 2012 while still at school. "Royals" followed and went to number one in the United States, an odd outcome for a sixteen-year-old New Zealander singing about owning none of the things pop songs list. Pure Heroine (2013), made with producer Joel Little, runs on finger snaps, deep sub-bass and a lot of empty space. The arrangements are thin on purpose and the vocals are stacked into small choirs, and that approach spread quickly through teen pop production. Melodrama (2017), written with Jack Antonoff, is a party broken into scenes and it topped the US chart. Solar Power (2021) turned acoustic and warmer. She also curated the soundtrack to Mockingjay Part 1 (2014). "Royals" won Song of the Year at the 2014 Grammys.
