History

Loituma built their music on two pillars of Finnish tradition: close, bright harmony singing and the kantele, the plucked zither of Finnish and Karelian folk music. The quartet grew out of the folk music department of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where it began in 1989 as a larger ensemble, and it settled into four singers who also played kantele, fiddle and other instruments. The members arranged or wrote their own pieces, often leaving room for improvisation, and drew lyrics from the Kalevala and the Kanteletar, the great collections of Finnish folk poetry. Their self-titled debut, released in 1995 and known internationally as Things of Beauty, and the follow-up Kuutamolla showed the range, from gentle, shimmering kantele pieces to playful vocal numbers. In 1997 they were named ensemble of the year at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. In 2006 a looped animation set to the scat section of their Ievan polkka, first posted on the Russian LiveJournal, turned the song into a worldwide internet craze. The group is recognisable by nimble, tongue-twisting vocals over a soft kantele shimmer.
