History

Llan de Cubel is one of the long-standing bands of the Asturian folk revival, a group that treats research and performance as the same job. Formed in Asturias in the mid-1980s, they built their repertoire from traditional tunes and songs collected through fieldwork in the region, and set them alongside original pieces written in the same idiom. Their line-up draws on the instruments of Asturian music, above all the gaita, the local bagpipe, and traditional percussion, together with fiddle, accordion, bouzouki, flutes and guitar, giving their records a texture between village dance music and the wider Celtic folk of the 1980s and 1990s. They sing in Asturian, and their albums, from the late 1980s onward through records such as Na llende and L'otru llau de la mar, helped give the language and its music a place on the international stage. They became regular guests at Celtic festivals, above all the Festival Interceltique de Lorient. A listener recognises them by interlocking gaita and fiddle melodies, steady acoustic accompaniment and unhurried, carefully arranged traditional song.
