History
Liquid Mind is the long-running project of composer Chuck Wild, and its sound is defined largely by what it leaves out: no beat, no hook, no sudden change. Each piece is made of slow, overlapping synthesizer swells that rise and fade at a breathing pace, so the music seems to hover rather than move forward. Wild came to it from a busy career in pop and screen music. He played keyboards in the new wave band Missing Persons in the early 1980s and later co-scored the television series Max Headroom. By his own account the project grew out of the panic attacks and anxiety of that period, and out of a wish to write music that sounded the way he wanted to feel. The result became a numbered album series, each volume carrying a plain functional subtitle such as Balance, Sleep or Meditation. Those titles describe how the records are used: for rest, massage, yoga and falling asleep. Within ambient meditation Liquid Mind stands for the purest form of the format, with very soft dynamics, long reverb tails and warm pads that hold one harmonic area for minutes at a time.
