History

Linkin Park built their sound on a division of labour no other band of the period used as cleanly: one singer with a high, straining rock voice, one rapping and producing, and a DJ handling samples and texture. The result was nu-metal with the aggression filtered through pop songwriting, verses that rap and choruses that open up, guitars kept simple, and electronics carrying as much of the arrangement as the band does. Hybrid Theory became the best-selling debut album of the century and Meteora repeated its structure with tighter production. In the End, a piano figure over a drum loop, states the method most clearly, and Crawling and Numb work the same seam of self-directed anger that made the records land with teenage listeners worldwide. A collaboration record with Jay-Z followed, then a deliberate move away from the formula toward more electronic and conceptual albums that split the audience. Chester Bennington's death in 2017 ended that lineup.
