History
Lil Tjay, born Tione Dalyan Merritt on April 30, 2001, in the South Bronx, New York, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He started writing lyrics while in a youth detention center at age 15, then began posting music on SoundCloud after his release in 2017. Early singles like "Brothers" and "Resume" caught a Columbia Records A&R's attention at a 2018 talent showcase, leading to a record deal. His melodic, auto-tune-driven style, often compared to fellow New Yorker A Boogie wit da Hoodie, earned him the nickname "Bronx Justin Bieber." His 2019 debut album "True 2 Myself" hit number 5 on the Billboard 200, and 2021's "Destined 2 Win" produced his biggest hit, "Calling My Phone" with 6LACK, which reached number 3 on the Hot 100. In June 2022, Tjay was shot multiple times during an attempted robbery in Edgewater, New Jersey, and spent time in a coma before recovering; he later described the experience as life-changing. He has continued releasing music since, including the album "222" (2023) and "They Just Ain't You" (2026).
