History

«Лейся, песня» worked the brass-forward end of the Soviet VIA format: a stage band with a horn section, stacked male harmonies, an electric rhythm section, and a repertoire aimed at restaurants and dance floors as much as at radio. The group came together in the mid-1970s and stayed in circulation into the following decade. Its best-known numbers, «Обручальное кольцо» (1977) and «Кто тебе сказал» (1978), show the method plainly: a simple strophic tune, a hook doubled by the brass, three or four voices closing the chorus in block harmony. Vyacheslav Dobrynin wrote for the band regularly, and the arrangements set a pattern that dozens of regional ensembles copied. Among the singers who passed through the line-up was Nikolai Rastorguev, later the frontman of Lyube. Three markers identify the sound: the horns, the dense male chorus, and a mid-tempo groove built for a dancing hall rather than a concert one.
