History

Less Than Jake play ska at pop-punk speed: fast downstroked guitars, a punchy saxophone and trombone section, shouted gang vocals and choruses built for a sweaty club. The band formed in Gainesville, Florida, in the early 1990s and came up through the DIY punk underground, touring constantly and releasing records on small independent labels before the third wave of ska broke into the mainstream. Losing Streak in 1996 and Hello Rockview in 1998 came out on a major label and became the records most fans point to, full of short, catchy songs about small-town boredom, bad jobs, drinking and friends. Where some ska bands leaned on retro rocksteady grooves, Less Than Jake sat much closer to Green Day and the punk side of the scene, with the horns acting as a second lead voice. They later moved to Fat Wreck Chords and kept releasing records long after the ska boom faded. Their shows are known for their chaotic humour and props, and the band became one of the most durable touring acts of the era.
