History

Lenny Dee is a Brooklyn DJ and producer who helped carry hardcore techno to American audiences and gave its darker, heavier branch a home. In the early 1990s he founded Industrial Strength Records, one of the first labels devoted to hard, fast electronic music in the United States, and it became a meeting point for American and European producers working with distorted kicks, harsh synths and relentless tempos. His own sound leans toward the industrial side of hardcore: pounding kick drums, metallic noise, dark samples, and a DJ's instinct for keeping a room moving. The long-running Industrial Fucking Strength compilation series documented the style as it grew harder and more abrasive. Later releases such as Noise Brûlée and Ballad of the Broken Turntable showed him still experimenting with noise and turntable craft. A listener recognises Lenny Dee by that New York grit mixed into the gabber and industrial hardcore template, and by the label name stamped on many records of the era.
