History
Lecrae is the artist most responsible for carrying Christian hip-hop into the mainstream rap conversation. Raised in Houston, he co-founded Reach Records in the mid-2000s, and the label, together with the 116 Clique around it, became the centre of the genre. His early records were straightforward gospel rap, but through the Church Clothes mixtapes and the album Gravity, which won a Grammy for best gospel album, he moved toward a sound that could sit next to anything on secular radio. Anomaly (2014) went further and reached number one on the Billboard 200, a first for a record from this scene. Let the Trap Say Amen (2018), made with the Atlanta producer Zaytoven, leaned fully into trap, with rattling hi-hats and organ-like keys under lyrics about faith and street life. Restoration (2020) turned inward, dealing with depression, doubt and recovery. His writing often mixes personal confession with commentary on race and justice. Listeners know him by his steady, measured Southern delivery and his habit of bringing theology into songs that sound like club records.
