History

LaVern Baker sang rhythm and blues with a big, brassy voice and a playful streak that made her one of the first female stars of the rock and roll era. She came from Chicago and early on performed under the name Little Miss Sharecropper before signing with Atlantic Records, where she cut her best-known sides. "Tweedlee Dee", recorded in 1954, became a crossover hit, and when a pop singer released a near-identical cover that outsold it, Baker publicly protested the practice of white artists copying Black records note for note. "Jim Dandy" (1956) was a number one R&B hit and a jumping, horn-driven showcase for her power, and she kept scoring through the late 1950s with songs including "I Cried a Tear". Later in life she spent years in the Philippines, where she worked as an entertainment director at a US military club, before returning to American stages. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her records stand out for the bold, bluesy shout, the novelty-tinged humour and the swing of the Atlantic house band behind her.
