History

Laraaji makes shimmering, meditative music built from the bright, cascading tones of an electrified zither or autoharp, often run through effects so that strummed and hammered strings turn into glowing, overlapping clouds of sound. Born Edward Larry Gordon, he studied music and worked as a comedian and actor before turning to spiritual practice and taking the name Laraaji. In the late seventies he was playing in Washington Square Park in New York when Brian Eno heard him and invited him to record, and the result, Ambient 3: Day of Radiance (1980), became part of Eno's ambient series. Its fast, hypnotic hammered patterns and slower, resonant meditations set the template for his sound. Through the eighties and nineties he released a large body of work on smaller labels and led workshops built around laughter as a meditative practice. A new generation of listeners discovered him in the 2010s, through reissues and new records such as Bring On the Sun (2017). A listener recognises Laraaji by the radiant zither drones, the sense of calm joy and, at times, his gentle chanting voice.
