History

L.A. Guns formed in Los Angeles in 1983, originally under the name Pyrrhus, built around guitarist Tracii Guns. An early lineup merged with the group Hollywood Rose in 1985 to form Guns N' Roses, before Tracii Guns split off and reformed L.A. Guns with singer Phil Lewis (formerly of Girl) and bassist Kelly Nickels. Signed to Vertigo/PolyGram, the band released its self-titled debut in 1988, a record later cited by Metal Hammer among the essential hair metal albums of the decade. Their second album, Cocked & Loaded (1989), produced the power ballad "The Ballad of Jayne," which reached No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains the band's signature song and biggest hit. Over the years L.A. Guns splintered into rival touring versions: the Tracii Guns-led lineup disbanded in 2012, while a separate version fronted by drummer Steve Riley continued until his death in 2023, after which that lineup also folded in 2025. The current band reunites Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis.
