History
Kurt Elling is an American jazz vocalist, composer and lyricist, born November 2, 1967, in Chicago and raised in Rockford, Illinois. He left the University of Chicago Divinity School one credit short of a master's degree to pursue jazz, performing around Chicago before signing with Blue Note Records. His 1995 debut, Close Your Eyes, earned a Grammy nomination and introduced his vocalese style, where composed lyrics are set to existing instrumental solos, distinct from wordless scat singing. Known for a four-octave baritone spanning technical virtuosity and emotional depth, he built a long partnership with pianist Laurence Hobgood. Elling won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman (2009) and has received multiple additional Grammy nominations across his career. He topped the DownBeat Critics Poll for male vocalist for fourteen consecutive years, performed at the White House for President Obama's first State Dinner, and later made his Broadway debut as Hermes in Hadestown.
