History

Kryptic Minds made some of the darkest and most stripped-back music in deep dubstep: cold half-step rhythms, long gaps between the hits and bass lines that feel more like pressure than melody. The project was started by Simon Shreeve in 1999 and developed as a duo with Brett Bigden. Before dubstep they worked in dark drum and bass, and that background shows in the precise, clinical sound design. Shreeve also founded the label Osiris Music in 2006, which became a home for the duo's own releases. Their album One of Us came out on Loefah's Swamp 81 and is often cited as one of the strongest long-form statements of halfstep dubstep; it was later remastered and reissued on Osiris. The Things They Left Behind followed on their own label. Shreeve has also worked outside the duo, for example with Karl O'Connor as CUB and under the slower, atmospheric name Mønic. Kryptic Minds are easy to pick out by their bleak mood, minimal arrangements and a tension that rarely resolves into a conventional drop.
