History

Korpiklaani are the party end of folk metal: accordion and fiddle leading bouncing riffs, polka and humppa rhythms, and songs about drinking, the forest and village life. The band grew out of Shaman, an earlier project of singer Jonne Järvelä from Lahti in Finland, and took the name Korpiklaani, meaning forest clan, with the debut Spirit of the Forest. From there the sound settled into a clear identity: heavy guitars kept simple and driving, folk instruments carrying the main melodies, and a gruff, cheerful voice singing in Finnish and English. Tracks such as Beer Beer, Vodka and Wooden Pints made them a fixture of festival crowds across Europe, and albums like Tales Along This Road kept the tempo high. Later records, including Manala, leaned more into Finnish-language lyrics and older folklore, showing that the band had more range than the drinking songs suggest. Listeners know Korpiklaani by the accordion hook, the stomping two-beat rhythm and the sense of a village dance played through a metal amp.
