History
Korn assembled the template that the next decade of heavy music copied. Coming out of Bakersfield, California, they detuned seven-string guitars until the riffs sat below where rock guitar normally lives, dropped the guitar solo almost entirely, and let a bass played with a rubbery, slap-heavy attack carry the melody. On top of that the vocal moved without warning between a low mutter, a scat-like run of nonsense syllables, a scream and something close to crying, which gave the songs their unsettled feel. The self-titled debut established the sound; Follow the Leader took it to number one and made the band the commercial centre of what was then being called nu-metal. Freak on a Leash is the clearest single piece of evidence, with the wordless vocal break in the middle. Got the Life pulled the groove closer to a dance beat, and Blind opens with a two-note guitar figure and a shouted cue that most listeners can place in a second.
