History

Kommunity FK built their sound on a cold, hypnotic bass line, droning guitar and Patrick Mata's detached, chant-like voice, a mix that helped define what Los Angeles came to call deathrock. Mata started the project in 1978, and he drew as much from Throbbing Gristle and David Bowie as from Dada and the cut-up method, which explains the fragmented, collage-like feel of the lyrics. The debut album The Vision and the Voice appeared in 1983 on Independent Project Records, followed by Close One Sad Eye in 1985. Those two records sit alongside the early work of Christian Death and 45 Grave as the core of the West Coast scene: less theatrical than British goth, drier and more ritual in mood. In the late 1980s the band went quiet while Mata led Sativa Luvbox, and the name was later revived for new recordings. The sound is easy to pick out: the slow, circling bass, the reverb that hangs over everything and a voice that sounds more like incantation than singing.
