History

Kim English sang house music the way she had learned to sing in church: big, open gospel phrasing riding over four-on-the-floor beats, with lyrics about faith, joy and believing in yourself. Born in Chicago, the city where house began, she started out as a gospel singer before moving into the club scene, and she recorded for the New York label Nervous Records. Nitelife and Supernatural made her name on dance floors in the mid-nineties, and the album Higher Things followed. Her peak came around the turn of the century, with a run of singles at the top of the American dance club chart, among them Unspeakable Joy, Missing You and Everyday. More number ones followed in the 2000s, including It Makes a Difference and My Destiny, the title song of a later album. Her records sit at the meeting point of gospel house and soulful vocal house, with piano chords, organ touches and a voice strong enough to carry a whole track on its own. Kim English died in 2019 at the age of 48, and her records remain staples of soulful house sets.
