History

Kikagaku Moyo made gentle, hypnotic psychedelic rock that could drift for minutes on a sitar drone and then swell into a heavy, fuzzed-out jam. The name means "geometric patterns", which Go Kurosawa linked to the shapes he saw behind his eyelids after jamming all night. He and guitarist Tomo Katsurada started the band in Tokyo in 2012, and the final line-up also included bassist Kotsu Guy, guitarist Daoud Popal and Ryu Kurosawa on sitar and keyboards. Members also founded the label Guruguru Brain to showcase psychedelic and experimental music from East Asia. Albums such as "Forest of Lost Children" (2014), "House in the Tall Grass" (2016) and "Masana Temples" (2018) move between folk-like quiet, krautrock repetition and long improvised peaks, and steady touring abroad won them a wide audience outside Japan. In January 2022 they announced an indefinite hiatus, released "Kumoyo Island" and played a last show in Tokyo that December. What stays with a listener: the patient builds, the sitar and the warm, communal feel of the playing.
