History
Scott Mescudi grew up in Cleveland and moved to New York in his early twenties, working retail while he recorded A Kid Named Cudi (2008), the mixtape that carried "Day 'n' Nite". Dot da Genius produced it around a thin two-note synth figure and almost no drums. Kanye West signed him to GOOD Music, and Man on the Moon: The End of Day arrived in 2009, built with Emile Haynie and Plain Pat, split into acts, narrated between tracks by Common. Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager followed in 2010 and went darker. The signature is not a rhyme scheme but a hum: a wordless melodic line, often doubled, sitting where a hook would normally go. Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' (2016) stretched that idea the furthest. In 2018 he recorded Kids See Ghosts with West.
