History

Kevin Saunderson is the member of the Belleville Three, alongside Juan Atkins and Derrick May, who pushed Detroit techno toward the dance floor and the charts. Where his friends leaned toward the abstract and futuristic, he paired machine rhythms with hooks and big, physical basslines. With vocalist Paris Grey he formed Inner City, whose "Big Fun" and "Good Life" became international hits in 1988 and carried the Detroit sound to a mainstream audience in Britain and Europe. Under the name Reese he released "Just Want Another Chance", and its growling, detuned bass sound became so widely copied in drum and bass that producers still call it a Reese bass. He ran the label KMS, which released his own work and that of other Detroit producers, and as E-Dancer he made darker, tougher club tracks such as "Heavenly". He has remained an active DJ for decades. Listeners recognise his records by the heavy, rolling bass, the crisp drum machine grooves, and the balance between Detroit's melancholy synths and an unashamed pop instinct.
