History

Keane built an arena rock band without a guitarist. Piano carries the riffs, the low end comes from keyboard bass, and the drums hit like a rock record, which gives the songs a rounder, more hymn-like weight than a guitar band would get. They came out of Battle in East Sussex and spent years playing to nobody before Hopes and Fears landed in 2004 and became one of the decade's biggest British albums. "Somewhere Only We Know" is the template: a descending piano figure, a voice pitched high and slightly frail, and a chorus that opens out rather than hardens. "Everybody's Changing" does the same trick faster, "Bedshaped" slower and sadder. Later records let synthesisers and harder textures in, and the band pulled away from the gentleness the first album was loved for. The recognisable element stayed constant: piano as the lead instrument, and a vocal that sounds like it is confiding rather than performing.
